Deck Restoration Melbourne

Bring your tired deck back to life — at a fraction of replacement cost

Deck Restoration Melbourne

Has your deck seen better days? Faded, grey, splintering, mossy, or starting to feel rough underfoot? Most weathered Melbourne decks can be restored — and at a fraction of the cost of replacing them.

The Deck Guy restores timber decks across Melbourne, Bayside, the Eastern Suburbs, Mornington Peninsula, and Geelong. Whether your deck is 5 years old and just needs love, or 25 years old and looks past saving, we can usually bring it back to life.

Operating since 2018 with 7+ years of dedicated deck work, we’ve restored hundreds of decks across Melbourne — most of them in worse shape than the owners thought.

How do you know if your deck needs restoring?

A few common signs:

  • Faded or grey colour — UV exposure bleaches timber over time. Looks worn, but the timber underneath is usually still solid.
  • Rough or splintery surface — happens when the protective oil has broken down. Feels rough underfoot, sometimes catches on shoes or pets’ paws.
  • Mould, mildew, or black spots — common in shaded areas or coastal humidity (Bayside especially). Looks worse than it is — usually just on the surface.
  • Cupping or warping boards — slightly more serious. Often caused by moisture imbalance, can sometimes be sanded out.
  • Loose, lifting, or popped nails/screws — fixable individually; signals it’s time for a full check-over.
  • Soft spots or sponginess underfoot — this one matters. Could indicate rot in the boards or subframe and needs proper investigation.

If your deck has any of the first four, it’s almost certainly restorable. If it has the last two, we’ll do a thorough assessment before quoting — restoration may still be possible, or partial replacement may be the better call.

What deck restoration actually involves

“Restoration” is a broad term. For us, it’s a process — not a single product applied to a tired deck. Depending on the condition of your deck, the restoration includes some or all of:

Deep cleaning — Pressure cleaning at the correct PSI (too high blows out the timber grain; too low doesn’t remove the mould). We use cleaning agents formulated for timber decks, not generic concrete cleaners.

Sanding — Where needed, we sand the deck back to remove the weathered grey layer, splintered surface, and old failed finishes. This exposes fresh timber underneath, ready to take new oil or stain.

Repairs — Replacing damaged boards, refixing loose screws, repairing minor structural issues. We carry spare timber to match common species (Merbau, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt) for invisible repairs.

Re-oiling, staining, or painting — Depending on what you want and what suits the timber. Two coats minimum, applied properly, with appropriate drying time between coats. We discuss colour and finish options before starting.

Sealing and finishing — Final protective coat that locks in the colour and protects against UV, moisture, and foot traffic.

This whole process typically takes 3-5 days on site, depending on deck size and how much work it needs.

Will my deck look like new?

Honest answer: usually yes, sometimes no.

A 5-10 year old Merbau deck that’s just faded and slightly rough? After restoration, it’ll look genuinely like a new deck — sometimes better, because the timber has aged and developed character that new timber doesn’t have.

A 20+ year old deck with deep weathering, multiple repairs over the years, and mismatched boards from old maintenance jobs? It’ll look transformed, but you can sometimes still see its history. We’re upfront about expectations before we start.

What we won’t do: promise a result we can’t deliver. If your deck genuinely needs replacement rather than restoration, we’ll tell you, and quote both options so you can make an informed decision.

Restoration cost — what to expect

Restoration is significantly cheaper than replacement. As a rough guide:

  • Small deck (under 20m²): typically $1,500-$3,500
  • Standard deck (20-35m²): typically $3,500-$6,500
  • Large deck (35-60m²): typically $6,500-$12,000
  • Very large or multi-level deck: quoted individually

These are indicative — the actual quote depends on current condition, what timber it is, what finish you want, and whether any repairs are needed. We provide free on-site quotes with everything itemised.

For comparison, replacing the same deck typically costs 4-5 times more. If restoration is viable, it’s almost always the smarter call.

Timber species we restore

We work with all common Melbourne decking timbers:

  • Merbau (Kwila) — by far the most common in Melbourne. Restores beautifully if sanded properly.
  • Spotted Gum — Australian native, gorgeous grain. Restores to near-new appearance.
  • Blackbutt — lighter native hardwood. Common in newer builds and bushfire zones.
  • Jarrah — premium WA hardwood. Restoration brings back the deep red colour.
  • Treated pine — common in raised decks and budget builds. Restorable but ages faster than hardwoods.
  • Composite decking — different process (no sanding), but we can clean and refresh composite decks too.

Not sure what timber you have? Send us a photo when you enquire and we’ll usually be able to identify it.

How often does a restored deck need maintenance afterwards?

After a full deck restoration Melbourne, your deck typically needs:

  • Year 1: A light clean and re-oil application around 12 months after restoration to maintain protection
  • Year 2-3: Another light maintenance coat
  • Year 4+: Maintenance every 2-3 years depending on exposure

Decks in heavy sun or coastal exposure (Bayside, Mornington Peninsula) need more frequent maintenance than sheltered inland decks. We offer ongoing deck maintenance services on a regular schedule so you don’t have to think about it — we just turn up when it’s time.

Where we restore decks

We service residential property owners across:

  • BaysideBrighton, Hampton, Sandringham, Cheltenham, Mentone, Beaumaris, Mordialloc
  • Eastern Suburbs — Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew, Toorak, South Yarra, Prahran, Glen Iris, Malvern
  • South-East — Keysborough, Glen Waverley, Moorabbin, Parkdale, Frankston
  • Mornington Peninsula — across the peninsula
  • Geelong region — Geelong and surrounds

If your suburb isn’t listed but is in Melbourne or Geelong, ask anyway. Often happy to travel for the right job.

Frequently asked questions

How long will my deck be out of action during restoration?

Typically, a deck restoration Melbourne will take 3-5 days from start to handover, depending on deck size. We work efficiently and aim to minimise disruption — but the finish needs proper drying time between coats, which can’t be rushed.

Can you restore a deck in winter?

Yes, but with caveats. Wet/cold conditions slow down oil drying time, and we need a stretch of dry weather for the finishing stages. We often book restoration work for spring and autumn — better drying conditions, and your deck is ready to enjoy come summer.

What if you find rot or structural issues during restoration?

We’ll stop, photograph what we’ve found, talk you through the options, and quote the additional work before proceeding. No surprises, no work done without your approval.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. Any genuine issue with the restoration itself within 12 months, we come back and sort it. The finish lifespan depends on usage and exposure (covered in maintenance recommendations).

Will you clean up after the job?

Every time. We bag and remove all old finish, sanded material, and debris. Your space is left ready to use.

Do you provide an itemised quote?

Yes. Always. Quote breaks down cleaning, sanding, repairs, materials (oil/stain/paint), labour, and any extras. You know exactly what you’re paying for before signing anything.
